What dental emergencies does NÜVA Smile treat?
Our dentists treat every common dental emergency the same day: severe toothache, knocked-out teeth, broken or cracked teeth, abscesses and facial swelling, lost crowns and fillings, and cuts or bleeding in the mouth. Children and adults are seen, and most problems are diagnosed and treated in one visit.
Severe toothache
We find the cause with an exam and X-rays, then treat it with a filling, root canal, or extraction.
Knocked-out tooth
A permanent tooth can often be saved if it is put back fast. Call us on the way.
Broken or cracked tooth
Bonding for chips, a crown for fractures, and a root canal if the nerve is exposed.
Abscess and swelling
We drain the infection and treat its source the same day.
Lost crown or filling
Bring the crown; we can often re-cement it at your visit.
Bleeding and mouth injuries
Cuts to the lips, tongue, cheeks or gums, and bleeding after an extraction.
Emergency tooth extraction
When a tooth cannot be saved, we remove it the same day.
Children's dental emergencies
Same-day care for kids, including knocked-out baby teeth.
What counts as a dental emergency?
A dental emergency is any problem in your mouth that causes severe pain, bleeding that won’t stop, swelling, or a tooth that has been knocked out or badly broken. These need same-day care, because waiting can cost you the tooth or let an infection spread.
Call us today if you have:
- Severe or throbbing tooth pain, especially with pain when biting or sensitivity to heat
- A knocked-out, loose or badly broken tooth
- Swelling in your gum, jaw or face, a pimple-like bump on the gum, or a bad taste that won’t go away
- Bleeding from the mouth that hasn’t slowed after 15 to 20 minutes of firm pressure
- A lost crown or filling that leaves a tooth sharp, painful or exposed
What should I do in the first hour of a dental emergency?
Stay calm, stop any bleeding with firm pressure, keep any tooth or fragment, and call your nearest NÜVA Smile office straight away. What you do in the first hour matters most for a knocked-out tooth, where acting within minutes gives the best chance of saving it. Follow the steps below.
| Emergency | Do this now | Don’t | Get to us |
|---|---|---|---|
| Knocked-out adult tooth | Pick it up by the crown, not the root. If dirty, rinse briefly in milk or saline. Push it back into the socket and bite on gauze, or keep it in milk, saline or the person’s own saliva. | Don’t rinse with water, scrub it, or let it dry out | Immediately; the best results come within 15 minutes |
| Knocked-out baby tooth | Control bleeding with gauze and keep the tooth. | Don’t put it back; it can damage the adult tooth underneath | Call us for same-day advice |
| Broken or cracked tooth | Rinse with warm water, use a cold compress on the cheek, and save every fragment. | Don’t chew on that side | The same day |
| Severe toothache | Rinse with warm water, floss gently to clear trapped food, and take an over-the-counter pain reliever as directed. | Don’t put aspirin on the gum; it burns the tissue | The same day |
| Abscess or swelling | Rinse gently with warm salt water. | Don’t squeeze or drain it; don’t rely on antibiotics alone | The same day, or the ER first if breathing or swallowing is affected |
| Lost crown or filling | Keep the crown. Cover the tooth with over-the-counter dental cement or reseat the crown with denture adhesive. | Never use super glue | Within a day or two; the same day if it hurts |
| Bleeding or a cut in the mouth | Press moistened gauze firmly on the spot for 15 to 20 minutes; use a cold compress for swelling. | Don’t keep checking it; steady pressure works | The ER if bleeding hasn’t stopped after 20 minutes of pressure |
When should I go to the ER instead of an emergency dentist?
Go to a hospital emergency room, or call 911, if you have trouble breathing or swallowing, swelling spreading toward your eye, throat or neck with a fever, bleeding that won’t stop after 20 minutes of pressure, a possible broken jaw, or a head injury.
An emergency room can stabilize you, manage pain and prescribe antibiotics, but it isn’t equipped to repair or save a tooth. Once the medical emergency is under control, call us for the dental treatment.
How does a same-day emergency visit work?
A same-day emergency visit at NÜVA Smile follows five steps. You call, we reserve the earliest slot at your nearest office, the dentist examines you with X-rays and relieves the pain, you get a cost estimate, and in most cases the problem is fixed in that visit.
Call or walk in.
Describe your symptoms and we reserve the earliest same-day slot at the office nearest you. Walk-ins are welcome; calling ahead, even from the car, cuts your wait.
Exam and X-rays.
The dentist finds the cause with an exam and digital X-rays.
Pain relief and a clear estimate.
We ease the pain first, then give you the cost before any treatment begins.
Treatment the same visit.
Filling, crown repair, root canal, drainage or extraction, completed in one appointment whenever possible.
Aftercare.
You leave with written instructions and a follow-up visit if one is needed.
Not an emergency, but want treatment finished in one visit? See our same-day dentist page.

How much does emergency dental care cost, and does insurance cover it?
The cost depends on the treatment your tooth needs; an exam with X-rays costs far less than a root canal or extraction. You get a clear estimate after diagnosis and before any treatment begins, and we check your insurance benefits before your visit whenever there is time.
Dental insurance: we accept most major plans, including Delta Dental, Aetna, Cigna, MetLife, Guardian, United Concordia and Horizon BCBSNJ, and file the claim for you.
Medical insurance: we bill medical insurance as well as dental when treatment qualifies, which can lower what you pay. Bring both cards.
NJ FamilyCare / Medicaid: we accept all five NJ FamilyCare plans (Horizon NJ Health, Aetna Better Health of New Jersey, Fidelis Care, UnitedHealthcare Community Plan and Wellpoint) plus fee-for-service Medicaid, for children and adults. No referral is needed; tell us your plan when you call.
No insurance: you can still be treated the same day. Financing is available through CareCredit®, Alphaeon, Proceed Finance and Sunbit, and the NÜVA Solutions Membership Club includes an emergency exam.
Is there a 24-hour emergency dentist in NJ?
Our offices are not open around the clock, but our phone line is answered 24/7. If you call after hours, the team takes your details and books the earliest available appointment. For trouble breathing or swallowing, uncontrolled bleeding or a head injury, go to the ER.
Weekday hours run as late as 7 or 8 PM at 14 of our offices on at least one day, and 17 offices open on Saturday, so most emergencies can be seen without waiting for Monday.

Emergency dentistry FAQs
Do you take walk-ins for dental emergencies?
Yes. All NÜVA Smile offices welcome walk-ins for dental emergencies during opening hours. Calling ahead, even from the car, is still the fastest route: it lets the team reserve your slot and prepare for your arrival, which cuts your wait once you get there.
How quickly can I be seen for a dental emergency?
Most emergency patients are seen the same day they call, often within a few hours, because every office reserves emergency slots daily. If your nearest office is fully booked, we direct you to another of our 25 New Jersey offices that can see you sooner.
Can I take a painkiller before my emergency appointment?
Yes. An over-the-counter pain reliever such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen, taken as directed on the label and if it is safe for you, will not interfere with your exam or the numbing. Never place aspirin directly on the gum or tooth, because it burns the tissue.
Do you treat dental emergencies for children?
Yes. NÜVA Smile treats dental emergencies for children and adults, so one call covers the whole family. If a child knocks out a baby tooth, do not try to put it back, because that can damage the adult tooth developing underneath. Call us for advice instead.
Will antibiotics alone fix a tooth infection?
No. Antibiotics can calm an infection for a while, but the source is inside the tooth, so it must be treated with drainage, a root canal or an extraction. Without that treatment the infection returns, often worse. We treat the source at your same-day visit.
Can I see an emergency dentist without insurance?
Yes. You can be treated the same day without insurance and receive a clear cost estimate before any treatment begins. Financing is available through CareCredit, Alphaeon, Proceed Finance and Sunbit, and the NÜVA Solutions Membership Club includes an emergency exam for members.
Do you accept Medicaid for emergency dental visits?
Yes. NÜVA Smile accepts all five NJ FamilyCare managed care plans and fee-for-service Medicaid for emergency visits, for children and adults, with no referral needed. Tell us your plan when you call, and we confirm your coverage while we schedule your same-day appointment.
Who provides emergency care at NÜVA Smile, and where does this advice come from?
NÜVA Smile dentists provide emergency care, with complex oral surgery handled by Dr. George Sandau, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon, NJ Specialty Permit #05852. The first-aid steps on this page follow international dental trauma guidance. They do not replace an exam.
We reserve same-day emergency slots every day, and walk-ins are welcome.
