In-Office Whitening
With in-office treatment, your hygienist will clean your teeth before your dentist applies a peroxide-based gel to each tooth. Your dentist will then shine a special light on the gel, activating the bleaching agent and causing it to lift stains from your tooth enamel. After 15 minutes, your dentist will remove the gel and check your teeth. They will then apply more gel and repeat this process up to three times.
Our team can use the Philips Zoom!® or Opalescence™ teeth whitening systems, depending on your needs. These options can whiten your teeth by up to eight shades in 45 minutes. We often recommend in-office treatment for patients who have a special event like a wedding coming up.
Your in-office treatment can also be combined with a take-home kit for long-lasting results.
Take-Home Kits
If you choose a take-home whitening kit, our New Jersey dentists can provide custom trays and a specialized whitening gel suited to your needs. Simply apply your whitening gel to your trays and wear them for anywhere from 15 minutes to overnight, depending on the strength of the bleaching agent. Your solution will have a specific set of instructions. Be sure to follow them to minimize sensitivity and prevent damage to your gums and tooth enamel.
We offer both Philips Zoom and Opalescence Go™ take-home whitening kits. While it will take 5–10 days to see your full whitening results, many patients prefer this option as it can be done from the comfort of home.

Foods like berries and sauces and drinks like coffee and red wine can discolor your teeth over time. We recommend minimizing your intake of these foods and drinking these beverages through a straw to keep your teeth a vibrant shade of white.
Practice Good Oral Hygiene
Brushing your teeth twice a day and flossing once a day will go a long way in keeping your smile healthy, vibrant, and attractive. You can also use whitening toothpaste to maintain your results. We also recommend attending twice-yearly checkups with your dentist to detect oral health concerns before they become serious.

Some Teeth Don't Respond to Whitening Understanding Extrinsic vs. Intrinsic Stains
Extrinsic stains are stains in the outer layers of your enamel. These stains are typically caused by food, beverages, and tobacco. Intrinsic stains occur in the deeper layers of your tooth enamel and are caused by aging, medications, certain health conditions, and dental trauma.
The bleaching agents used in teeth whitening treatments can only lift stains from the outer layers of your enamel, meaning intrinsic stains are more permanent and require a different solution. If you have intrinsic stains you wish to conceal, our New Jersey dentists may recommend dental bonding or veneers.
