How much do braces cost in New Jersey?

At NÜVA Smile, braces cost $2,700 to $8,000, depending on how complex your case is and which type of braces you choose. Simple cases with metal braces sit at the lower end. You get a written price at a free consultation, and payment plans and insurance can lower your cost.

What makes braces cost more or less?

  • Type of braces: traditional metal braces are our least expensive option for correcting major misalignment. Ceramic, gold and Damon™ braces, FASTBRACES® and clear aligners are priced by case at your consultation, and FASTBRACES® TURBO™ costs more than the standard system.
  • How much your teeth need to move: mild crowding or a small gap usually needs less treatment than a deep overbite, underbite or crossbite.
  • Length of treatment: braces take about 18 to 24 months on average; shorter cases generally cost less.
  • Extra steps: some cases need spacers, extractions or other dental work before braces go on.

How much are braces per month?

Spread over a payment plan, braces at NÜVA Smile can work out to roughly $113 to $225 a month at the $2,700 starting price, depending on the term. The table shows simple monthly math for both ends of our price range, before any down payment, interest or fees.

Total priceOver 12 monthsOver 18 monthsOver 24 months
$2,700 (starting price)$225 a month$150 a month$112.50 a month
$8,000 (top of range)$667 a month$444 a month$333 a month

Illustration only: your actual monthly payment depends on your price, any insurance payment, your down payment and the terms of your plan. We offer CareCredit® financing, in-house payment plans for certain cases, and orthodontic discounts through our membership club. OrthoFX® aligner patients can also use FXPay™ plans with 0% down options and no application fees.

Does dental insurance cover braces?

Many dental plans pay part of the cost of braces, and NÜVA Smile bills both dental and medical insurance where treatment qualifies, which most practices don’t do. We run a free benefits check before you commit, so your written price already reflects what your plan is likely to pay.

  • Bring both cards: dental and medical insurance are checked together.
  • Benefits reset January 1: most dental plans run on the calendar year. Starting braces before December 31 can use this year’s remaining benefits.
  • HSA and FSA: orthodontic treatment generally counts as a qualified medical expense, so you can use pre-tax funds toward your share.
  • No insurance: our membership club includes orthodontic discounts, and financing is available for patients who qualify.

A benefits check is not a guarantee of payment; your insurer decides final coverage at the time of service.

Does NJ FamilyCare (Medicaid) cover braces for children?

Yes, for members under 21 when braces are medically necessary, not for cosmetic reasons. The treating dentist completes New Jersey’s HLD (NJ-Mod3) assessment. A score of 26 or more, or a qualifying condition, supports approval, and every case needs a prior authorization, which NÜVA Smile submits for you.

  • The orthodontic consultation does not need prior authorization. We can examine your child and complete the assessment at the first visit.
  • Scores under 26 can still be considered with documented extenuating circumstances.
  • If approved, treatment is covered under EPSDT, the federal benefit that guarantees medically necessary care for members under 21.
  • If not approved, we explain the result and your other options, including payment plans.

Bring your child’s NJ FamilyCare member ID card. See our NJ FamilyCare dental coverage page for the plans we accept.

How can I get affordable braces in NJ?

The most affordable route to braces is usually traditional metal braces, started after a free consultation, paid through a monthly plan, with every insurance benefit applied. At NÜVA Smile, that means braces from $2,700, dental and medical billing, membership discounts, and NJ FamilyCare for qualifying children.

  1. Start with the free consultation. Get a written price and compare options before you commit.
  2. Ask about metal braces. They are our lowest-cost way to correct major misalignment.
  3. Apply every benefit. Dental, medical, HSA or FSA, and NJ FamilyCare if your child qualifies.
  4. Time it for your benefits. If you have a dental plan, starting before your benefits reset can save money.
  5. Spread the cost. CareCredit®, in-house plans for certain cases, or FXPay™ for OrthoFX® aligners.
  6. Join the membership club if you have no insurance for orthodontic discounts.

What Can Braces Correct?

Braces are a tried-and-true method for correcting a variety of orthodontic problems, including:

Overbite

Underbite

Overcrowding

Open Bite

Gapped Teeth

Crossbite

Braces can correct these alignment problems in about 18 to 24 months on average. Your total treatment time will depend on the severity of your misalignment.

The Benefits of Braces,

FASTBRACES, and OrthoFX clear aligners

Straighter Teeth

Straighter teeth look healthier and more attractive than crooked teeth. After your treatment, you can expect a straighter, more dazzling smile that makes you feel more confident.

Fewer Dental Problems

Because straight teeth are easier to clean, you may be less prone to decay and all the problems it can lead to. Additionally, orthodontics can give you a more even bite that puts less strain on your teeth.

Preventative Treatment

When a child receives braces in their developmental stages, the braces can help prevent more complex dental problems later in life that may prove costly to correct.

Cost-Effective

Metal braces are the least expensive orthodontic treatment to correct major misalignment. And braces are highly effective. They also help prevent dental problems that can be costly to fix.

Alternative Orthodontic Treatments

We Offer FASTBRACES, Damon Braces, and Invisalign

If you’re an adult or teenager who’s put off by the idea of wearing bulky metal brackets for over a year, you may be curious about alternative treatment options like Invisalign®. Our offices throughout New Jersey offer alternative orthodontic treatments to traditional braces, such as:

What to Expect When Receiving Braces

Once you or your child has been approved for braces, you can expect these steps from your NÜVA Smile dentist or orthodontist:

Our offices are easily accessible and our team is fluent in several different languages: Russian, Ukrainian, Arabic, Spanish, and Polish.

Preparation

Your orthodontist will take impressions of your teeth. Spacers may be placed prior to receiving your brackets and wires to make room for the orthodontic bands.

Our offices are easily accessible and our team is fluent in several different languages: Russian, Ukrainian, Arabic, Spanish, and Polish.

Brackets and Wires

Our orthodontist will adhere a bracket to each tooth. If spacers were used prior to your treatment, they will be removed. The orthodontic bands are placed and a wire is threaded through the brackets and secured in place with elastics.

Checkups

Your orthodontist will periodically tighten or adjust your braces. You may feel some discomfort after these appointments, but that can be managed by taking over-the-counter pain medication, applying a cool compress to your jaw, and drinking cold water or eating soft, cold foods. This discomfort should only be temporary.

Remove Brackets and Wires

At your final orthodontic appointment, your braces will be removed and more impressions of your teeth will be taken. You will be provided with a retainer to wear, typically at night, to keep your teeth from returning to their old positions.

Maintaining Your Results

With a Retainer After Braces

Once your braces have been removed, you will be provided with a custom-made retainer. You may be instructed to wear your retainer for several hours each day and every night indefinitely. This retainer will hold each tooth in its new position as the jawbone heals around it, maintaining your results for years to come.

Frequently Asked Questions

About Braces at NÜVA Smile

What should I expect during my braces consultation?

One of our orthodontists will examine the position of each tooth, the alignment of your jaws, and the shape of your dental arches. We'll capture digital X-rays and 3D panoramic scans for a precise overview. Once your orthodontist has a better idea of your treatment plan, they will be able to provide you with an idea of how frequent your checkups will be and how long you may need to wear your braces.

Which orthodontic option is best for children?

Traditional braces are often the best orthodontic option for children. Kids as young as eight can be eligible for braces! With removable aligners like Invisalign, the patient is responsible for remembering to wear their aligner trays. With traditional braces, patients don't have to remember to wear their braces and they can't be misplaced.

How can I take care of my braces during treatment?

In addition to attending your regular check-ups at NÜVA Smile, be sure to brush after every meal and floss between each tooth once a day. Avoid eating hard and sticky foods during treatment. Be mindful of the condition of your braces, and let your orthodontist know if something's amiss. We can get you in for a quick appointment.

What is the cheapest type of braces?

Traditional metal braces are the least expensive way to correct major misalignment at NÜVA Smile, with complete treatment starting at $2,700. They also suit most children, because they cannot be lost or left out. Your written price depends on your case and is given at the free consultation.

Is the braces consultation really free?

Yes. NÜVA Smile offers a free orthodontic consultation at every office, with no obligation. It usually takes 30 to 60 minutes and includes an exam, digital X-rays or scans where needed, your treatment options, a written price and a check of your insurance and financing options.

Can I get braces with no insurance?

Yes. Without insurance, you can spread the cost with CareCredit® financing or an in-house payment plan for certain cases, and our membership club includes orthodontic discounts. Braces start at $2,700, and HSA or FSA funds can usually be used toward orthodontic treatment.

Are affordable braces as effective as more expensive options?

Yes, for most cases. Traditional metal braces correct the widest range of problems, from crowding to crossbite. Higher-priced options mainly change how braces look or how quickly some cases finish, not whether teeth end up straight. Your dentist explains the trade-offs at the consultation.

Do you offer payment plans for kids' braces?

Yes. Parents can use CareCredit® financing or an in-house payment plan for certain cases, alongside any dental or medical insurance. Children under 21 with NJ FamilyCare may qualify for covered braces when treatment is medically necessary and the prior authorization is approved.
