So What Are Dental Implants?

Dental implants are small titanium posts that are surgically placed in your jaw to restore the missing root of a tooth. Once the area heals, they provide an incredibly stable foundation for an implant-supported crown, bridge, or denture. We choose the restoration based on the extent of your tooth loss and design it to mimic the aesthetics of your natural teeth.

In addition to looking exceptionally life-like, implant-supported restorations provide several other benefits. By stimulating the tissues in your jaw, dental implants prevent serious oral health conditions like bone atrophy.

All-on-4® Dental Implants

All-on-4 is a revolutionary technique that allows patients who wouldn't normally qualify for implants to restore an entire arch of teeth. Long-term tooth loss often leads to bone atrophy which can affect the success of traditional dental implants. However, All-on-4 implants take advantage of remaining bone tissue by placing the posts into the jaw at strategic angles. This allows patients to skip preparatory bone grafting. The method uses just four dental implants (instead of the standard six to eight per arch) and supports a full denture

Mini Dental Implants

If you have sustained jawbone recession or are unable to undergo more invasive surgery, our dentists may recommend mini dental implants. Mini dental implants work similarly to traditional dental implants except they are smaller and placed into the bone over the gums rather than under. Because they are less invasive, it typically takes less time to recover from the procedure. While they are not right for everyone, mini dental implants give a wider range of patients the opportunity to enjoy implant-supported restorations.

Candidates for Dental Implants

While implants treat all kinds of tooth loss, they are not right for everyone. We will carefully examine your smile and assess several factors before recommending this treatment option. Candidates for dental implants need to have:

Good Oral Health

Besides tooth loss, patients should have otherwise good dental health and be free of periodontal disease. We can provide periodontal treatment, for example, before moving forward with your implants. We might also recommend extracting a damaged tooth to improve your results.

Sufficient Jawbone Dentistry

Patients need to have a strong jawbone in order to support the implant posts. If you do not have a sufficient foundation, we can perform a bone graft or sinus lift to restore your candidacy.

No Increased Risk

Certain factors like smoking and uncontrolled diabetes can increase your chances of complications during the procedure. Make sure to go over your medical history thoroughly with the team at NÜVA Smile so we can determine whether treatment is safe for you.

Do I Need Preparatory Procedures?

Some patients may be able to skip preparatory treatments by choosing All-on-4 or mini dental implants instead of traditional implants. All-on-4 makes the most out of existing bone tissue by placing two of the implants at an angle. Mini implants are smaller in diameter and require less bone density to place.

In other cases, patients will experience better long-term results with conventional implants and will need preliminary dental work to increase their chances of success. The most common preparatory treatments are bone grafts and sinus lifts. These procedures are designed to restore lost bone tissue and build up the jaw, so patients have a strong foundation to support their implants.

Consultation

Every dental implant patient begins with a consultation at one of our New Jersey offices. Our dentists will take highly detailed digital x-rays of your jaw to look for signs of bone recession, and map out the best positions for your implants.

Implant Surgery

When you arrive for your implant surgery, we will first administer an anesthetic to numb your gums and jawbone. We also offer various types of sedation, including nitrous oxide (laughing gas) or intravenous (IV) sedation to induce a deeper state of relaxation, if needed. Once you are comfortable, we will make small incisions and carefully place the titanium implant posts in the jaw.

Osseointegration

Over the next three to six months, the titanium implant posts will fuse with the jaw in a process known as osseointegration. If you qualify for same-day dental implants, we will attach a temporary restoration directly to your implant posts. If you don't, you will be given a removable restoration called a flipper to maintain your appearance in the meantime.

Abutments

After you have completely healed, our dentists will place a small connector piece to each titanium implant post called an abutment. Abutments require a second small surgical procedure to attach. We typically allow our patients a few weeks to heal before securing their final restorations.

Restoration

When you are ready, you will return to the office to receive your permanent implant-supported crown, bridge, or denture. Our dentist will secure the restoration to your abutments and show you the final results.

A patient explains the many benefits she has experienced by undergoing dental implant placement and other treatments at NÜVA Smile. She was so impressed with their work that she also brings her father to their offices.

Same-Day Dental Implants

Our offices throughout New Jersey offer same-day dental implants for qualifying patients. This cutting-edge technique allows patients to leave with a fixed restoration on the same day as their implant surgery. Our dentists use computer-assisted technology to precisely attach temporary crowns onto each implant post. While the biggest advantage is the convenience of immediate restoration, same-day implants can also improve your final results. Patients are less likely to experience gum recession and contamination of the tooth socket with same-day implants and may have an easier time with osseointegration.

Is treatment worth it in the end?

Understanding the Cost and Value of Dental Implants

Due to the complexity and necessary training, dental implants are generally more expensive than traditional methods of restorative dentistry. However, you should think of implants as an investment in your long-term health and dental care. By protecting against bone recession and other oral health conditions, implants can save you from needing costly restorative procedures in the future. Meanwhile, implant-supported restorations can last longer than removable prosthetics, saving you the expense of more frequent replacements.

While the savings are worth noting over the long term, you will begin to experience other benefits right away. Dental implant-supported restorations are incredibly comfortable and offer so much stability, they will feel just like your natural teeth. Furthermore, maintenance is simple. Implant dentures do not require overnight soaking, special brushing techniques, or rinsing after meals. Treat your new crown, bridge, or denture like you would your real teeth and enjoy your life without thinking about tooth loss.
